Introduction
In this lesson we will introduce the German modal verbs: wollen, können, müssen, dürfen and sollen. In German these verbs can be used by themselves, for example: "Ich will nichts mehr", i.e. "I don't want more". They can also be used with other verbs. In this case the other verb is used in its infinitive form. For example we can say "Ich will dir etwas sagen", i.e. "I want to tell you something".

They don't want to work today.

He wants to see his kids.

Negation of "Müssen"
In the following sentences you'll notice that "nicht müssen" doesn't translate as "must not", instead it translates as "don't need to".

You guys don't have to come.
Ihr müsst nicht kommen.

Formal you don't have to wait in the cold.
Sie müssen nicht in der Kälte warten.

He doesn't have to repair his bike.
Er muss sein Fahrrad nicht reparieren.

I don't have to work today.
Ich muss heute nicht arbeiten.

You don't have to pay for me as well.
Du musst nicht für mich mit bezahlen.

We don't have to drive to my parents.
Wir müssen nicht zu meinen Eltern fahren.

They don't have to wait for the train.
Sie müssen nicht auf den Zug warten.

Dürfen

He is allowed to go to school alone now.
Er darf jetzt alleine zur Schule gehen.

You are allowed to visit me in the hospital today.

They are allowed to eat two scoops of ice cream sometimes.
Sie dürfen manchmal zwei Kugeln Eis essen.

Nobody is allowed to go into my room.

Formal you may address me now with the informal you.
Sie dürfen mich jetzt duzen.

Negation of "Dürfen"
In the following sentences, you'll notice that "nicht durfen" doesn't translate as "don't need to", instead it translates as "must not" or "not allowed to".

She is not allowed to play on my guitar.
Sie darf nicht auf meiner Gitarre spielen.

I mustn't fall asleep in the train.
Ich darf nicht im Zug einschlafen.

We mustn't drive too fast.
Wir dürfen nicht zu schnell fahren.

You guys mustn't forget about me.
Ihr dürft mich nicht vergessen.

He mustn't leave the bicycle path.
Er darf den Fahrradweg nicht verlassen.

We aren't allowed to climb over the wall.
Wir dürfen nicht über die Mauer klettern.

You mustn't arrive too late tomorrow.
Du darfst morgen nicht zu spät kommen.
